Most Jews Have Fled Regions of

Persecution

It is interesting to speculate why Christians have replaced Jews as the most persecuted religious group. One reason could be that the vast majority of world Jewry lives today in the U.S. and Israel, countries where freedom of religion is respected.

In his book review of John L. Allen Jr.’s “The Global War on Christians” (Bookshelf, Dec. 20), Philip Jenkins quotes the author, who states that “Christians today indisputably are the most persecuted religious body on the planet.” This slaughter is unquestionably deplorable.

But it is interesting to speculate why Christians have replaced Jews as the most persecuted religious group. One reason could be that the vast majority of world Jewry lives today in the U.S. and Israel, countries where freedom of religion is respected. Although it is undoubtedly a fact that persecution of Christians is not limited to the Arab world, it is noteworthy that almost no Jews live in that part of the world, having fled or having been expelled from their ancient communities following the establishment of the state of Israel.
