In Tunisia, Islamists willingly gave up power. Will the U.S. now help?

“Tunisia’s parliament erupted in hard-earned celebration last week after adopting a model constitution and marking a democratic milestone for the birthplace of the Arab Spring. The otherwise bleak regional outlook makes this achievement even more remarkable.

Militias have the run of Libya next door. Syria’s brutal civil war enters its fourth year. Egypt, which was inspired by Tunisia’s uprising in late 2010 to topple Hosni Mubarak, has reverted to military dictatorship, violence and terrorism. Tunisia’s relative success is overlooked but offers an alternative to sulfurous Arab politics that ought to be embraced by the West…”
