Several days after being critically injured during an explosion in a Gaza Strip terror tunnel, today the condition of Second Lieutenant Achiah Klein started to improve and he opened his eyes for the first time.  Klein is still hospitalized in an intensive care unit at Soroka Hospital in Be’ersheva and his condition is defined as critical.

Klein’s doctors emphasize that he suffered from severely damaged eyes and stressed that he will require additional surgeries in the future.  Nevertheless, he was disconnected from the respirator and began to talk with the people that surrounded him.

“We pray that he will not have a vision problem and that every thing will be ok,” a friend of the family told Israel’s Channel 2 News Online.  “He is a handsome boy, a fighter, always helps other people, and is loved by every one.  He always thinks how to contribute and it was terrible to hear about what happened.  We are all with the family.  We can only hope and pray.”

Five IDF soldiers were injured in an explosion in a Gaza terror tunnel

Two other IDF soldiers were moderately injured in the incident and two officers with the rank of lieutenant colonel and a major who served as the commander of the Samar Engineering Corps Unit were lightly injured.

The IDF soldiers were injured after part of a Gaza terror tunnel that was discovered earlier in the month exploded.  The soldiers had sought to destroy Hamas’s terror infrastructure and to remove security threats posed to the citizens of the State of Israel, the IDF Spokespersons Office stated.

The IDF Spokespersons Office posted a video where one can witness the explosion of the Gaza terror tunnel.   Initial investigations indicate that the IDF Engineering Corps soldiers operating in the area activated the explosion of the terror tunnel revealed several weeks ago, as an explosive device was planted inside the tunnel without the soldiers’ knowledge.  The IDF soldiers standing outside the tunnel were wounded from the shrapnel.
