The campaign against the Yazidis was launched by ISIS over two years ago, in August 2014, when its forces began an assault upon the Yazidi villages in Sinjar, a district in the northern Iraqi province of Nineveh. At least 5,000 Yazidis have been killed during the genocide, while 3,200 women and children remain in ISIS captivity. Approximately 70,000 people, estimated to make up 15 percent of the overall Yazidi population, are reported to have fled Iraq.
