This year a new course that teaches Muslims how to proselytize called “The Muslim Voice: Islamic Preaching, Public Speaking and Worship,  is restricting access to the course to Muslims only.  Created by Dr. Ingrid Mattson, the London and Windsor Community , an affiliate of Western University in London, Ontario.

According to the syllabus it is “open to Muslim men and women who offer religious leadership and/or speak publicly about Islam on behalf of their communities.”

Moray Watson, is an accountant who says he is against Islamic extremism.  He wanted to audit the course to see what it was about and to test the prerequisite in the syllabus.  “(The school) gets $6.5 million (from the government). Some of it is mine and I’m not allowed to take the course because I’m not a Muslim,” he said in the National Post.  After registering for the course, he was barred from attending because he was not Muslim

“I thought (Mr. Watson) may have been Muslim.  I had no idea when he came to class whether he was Muslim or not,” she said.

After he complained, the school changed the syllabus, rephrasing – the course was “open to men and women who offer religious leadership to Muslim communities and/or speak publicly about Islam on behalf of a Muslim community.  Enrollment is limited; preference is given to matriculated students.”

Watson says a course on how to preach should be in a mosque or community centre  and not in a publicly funded university.  Furthermore, especially because of the rise of Islamic extremism in the community, students should have full knowledge of what Ms. Mattson is teaching.

Dr. Ingrid Mattson, was born in l963 in Kitchener, Ontario.  She converted to Islam in l987 in Waterloo.

She was the first woman and first convert to lead the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) from 2006 till 2010.   The New York Times described her as “Perhaps the most noticed figure among American Muslim Women.”

Founded in l981 by American members of the Muslim Brotherhood, the ISNA has a long history of association with Islamic extremism.  It is said to support Wahhabism and jihadist ideologies such as Hamas.  Daniel Pipes in an article said it was an “apologist for Wahhabism.”

Terrorism expert Steve Emerson says about Mattson; “She has made statements that refuse to condemn Hamas and Hezbollah.  She has made statements that essentially legitimize Osama Bin Laden’s actions by claiming that he would be peaceful if only he had a peaceful outlet to express his views.”

She has been harshly critical of Israel.  “The American government has not criticized sufficiently the brutality of the Israeli government… (Israel’s) oppression left unchecked can increase to immense proportions until the oppressed are smothered in helplessness and rage.

The ISNA, a Muslim umbrella group the largest Muslim organization in North America has a separate branch,  ISNA Canada.  In September 2013, the Canada Revenue Service revoked the registration of ISNA Canada due to an alleged link to a  terror organization.  Funds intended for charity went instead to the Hizbul Mujahidden wing of Jamaat -e Islam.

In 2012, Dr. Mattson was appointed the first London and Windsor Community Chair of Islamic Studies at Huron University College’s Faculty of Theology at the University of Western Ontario.
