The IDF fears an Israeli soldier may have been kidnapped around 9:30 a.m. in the vicinity of Rafah. This occurred when gunmen opened fire on IDF troops in the southern Gaza Strip city. The IDF suspects terrorists kidnapped a soldier, and is conducting extensive searches and efforts to resolve the situation. The IDF has constantly warned of the dangers of Hamas attempts to kidnap soldiers, and has thwarted several such efforts in the last few days. Hamas’s military wing claims it has captured an Israeli soldier, shortly after the IDF confirms in a statement that “initial indication suggests that an IDF soldier has been abducted by terrorists” during an attack around 9:30 a.m. Former National Security Adviser Giora Eiland says this means “an escalation” in the Rafah area of the Strip where the kidnapping took place, as the IDF hunts for the soldier, but may also mark an escalation of the entire conflict.
