Professor of tumor biology Georg Klein, a Holocaust survivor and author who came to Sweden from Budapest in the 1940s, passed away earlier this month at the age of 91. A well-known and highly respected Swedish intellectual, Klein often spoke about his experiences in the war, and recently gave an interview to a Swedish journal, where he gave his thoughts on good and evil, given the many hardship he had seen.
“A friend wondered once about my experiences from the Holocaust and if they could have made me war-damaged. No, I replied, it’s you and other Swedes that are peace-damaged. Centuries without war, revolution and other major upheavals have shaped your belief that man is essentially good.”
